In a message dated 97-08-27 14:09:39 EDT, you write:

<< typically use a metal-prep solution, followed by DuPont Prime & Seal.
However, I have used DuPont Variprime before and if I recall, I believe that

Variprime is listed as a self-etching primer-sealer and does not require a
primer-sealer coat over it (although it certainly wouldn't hurt anything to
do
so). >>
I used to earn a living with DuPont products, and Variprime is a really good
etching primer. On my jeep I shot a coverage coat of Variprime, followed it
with Prime'n'seal, and then did any plastic work over the prime and seal.
(My DuPont rep checked this out and It was Kosher, so don't let anyone tell
you that you have to apply filler over bare metal) . Where I knew that there
would be filler, I left 24 grit grinder marks and primed over them just be
doubly sure of good adhesion.
You can also apply filler over other two part primers, such as PPG2 DP40,
DP48, etc.
This provides a barrier coat under the filler, and allows the filler to
adhere better, as well as provides better corrosion protection.
After the plastic work was done there was of coarse some bame metal again.
Another thin (coverage only) coat of Variprime was shot here. I applied 2-3
coats of DuPont Euro-Prime over the areas that needed a little build and
block sanded them flat.
(I'm ramling)
To shorten this up, after the bodywork was all finished and the body was
ready for paint, I shot another medium-wet coat of Prime'n' seal (high hiding
red-which approximates the original GI primer, as well as gives the body a
uniform color and epoxy seals everything underneath) and followed it
wet-on-wet with the WW2 OD.
Worked great and is holding up really well.
Sorry so long.
