The sulfuric acid reacting with pure copper does indeed form copper
sulphate, ( which is poisonous to almost every living thing) and water. Don't
ingest it. And, don't get any copper into the battery, unless you want it to
go dead.

Lee,

Is the sulfuric acid getting out of the battery by vaporizing, or is it
splashing out? Could the problem be better addressed by ventilating the
battery box? Why does the acid selectively act on the copper and not the lead
terminal (?galvanic property of the metal? -- will zinc work ?)
