You shold be aware old U.S. Route 66 was replaced by sections, starting =
in 1960, with a multilane interstate. Much of the old road is still =
useable (depending on the state it's in), but many parts of it have been =
destroyed/overrun by the associated Interstate Highway. What will happen =
then, is to drive as far as you can on the 66, then when it discontinues, =
get on the interstate, and go until it starts up again. Keep doing that =
until you get to about Whittier, California.
Temperatures vary in the summertime; in the deserts of New Mexico =
(really not desert, but a Steppe) and the arid parts of Arizona and =
California, the midsummer temperatures typically climb to 115+F during =
the days. Early June would be a nice time to come. Humidity throught the =
desert portions dips to as low as 8-10% during the summer. Near St. Louis =
it is not uncommon to encounter summertime temperatures of 85-95 Deg. F. =
with humidity percentages with similar numbers - quite uncomfortable (by =
my standards, but remember, lots of people live there!). Watch for summer =
rainstorms (Thunderstorms, occasional tornadoes), which can be =
impressive.
While you are making this trip, be sure to visit some of the national =
parks, although many are not on Route 66. Pike's Peak, Grand Canyon, Badla=
nds, Yellowstone, Mt Rushmore, Big Sur, Yosemite .... the list goes on =
and on.
I have seen cars with foreign registration (British & German) =
occasionally cruising through the states. Check with Avis, Hertz or some =
of the other multinational rental car compnaies to find out about =
licensing requirements. I believe there are international drivers' =
licenses available, for not much expense or trouble. One of those would =
be honored in all states.
Gasoline is widely available. Prices were VERY HIGH this summer at $1.23 =
US for 87 Octane unleaded gasoline - $1.55 US for 92 Octane unleaded. =
Aircraft gasoline (which it is illegal to put into road vehicles) has =
been running about $1.95 US per gallon for 100 Octane LoLead (More lead =
than you could stand, probably)
There are warbird museums spread throughout the country, from Kansas to =
California that I know about.There is the National Air and Space Museum =
in Washington DC that is not to be missed. You'd have to see it to =
believe it. Also, there are many other Smithsonian museum branches =
(Natural History, etc) which would also be worth seeing. Don't forget to =
find out about the Donfederate Airforce, which has holdings throughout =
the country. If you're going to do this, take at least 6 weeks, and plan =
your trip well. You won't be disappointed.
Ther are many sources of parts throughout the country. If you need a =
list, let the MIL-VEH list know. I bet you'll be buried in material. =
There's people to meet and share stories with, too. If you're in =
California I can show you some of the most beautiful river rafting =
country you'll ever see. The redwoods are fun, too!

Hi all,
One of my friends has a longtime dream of driving the Route 66 (Or
what's
left of it) from Chicago to L.A. with his Harley-Davidson WLA.
During a MV-rally last weekend he discussed this with us and we couldn't
bear the thought of him driving 2448 miles all alone on his WLA, so far
from home (We live in The Netherlands-Europe). We tried to talk this
idea out of his head but nothing worked, so in the end we decided that
we might as well join him (a dirty job, but someone has to do it).
Before making any serious plans we need some advice from the mil-veh
guys in the U.S.A.
Did any of you do this before??, what can we expect in the the southern
states like extreem tempatures, what's the best time of the year to
do this, are Dutch licensed cars and motorcycles allowed to drive on
U.S.
roads, can I drive accross the U.S. with my European driver-license,
what's the octane rating of the fuel used in the U.S., are there any
spare parts sources near the route 66 (we're planning to go with 2 WLA's
and 2 GPW's), are there any MV or Warbird related museums or something
like that in the neighbourhood of the route 66??.
We would be very gratefull if someone could answer some of these
questions, if we really decide to do this, we might come up with some
more questions.
