Garry,

Some of the differences between a military M38 and a civilian CJ-3A are:

(1) If the gauges are fixed in the dash, it is civilian. If it has a
drop-out dash, it is military. This is probably the best and the easiest way
to tell the difference.

(2) Both jeeps have a panel in the windshield for the duct to the heater on
the front cowl. On the M38, the panel unbolts. On the CJ-3A, the panel is
hinged with a handle, and doesn't unbolt.

(3) The M38 has axe and shovel slots embossed under the body on passenger
side, that the CJ-3A doesn't have.

(4) The CJ-3A has drain holes in floorboards that come out of the side with a
2" X 1" oval hole.

(5) M38 has 24V waterproof electrical system. The CJ-3A is either 6V or 12V,
depending on year. (This distinction is not as useful, as it is fairly
common to find MV's that have been converted to 12V.)

I've come across a vehicle that is for sell that is either a CJ-3A or a
M-38 (probably the CJ-3A but I want to be sure).

It has the solid glass windshield and the vent centered on the
windshield frame that is an earmark for both vehicles. My question is:
What do I need to look for to see if it is a M-38 and not a CJ-3A?
I'm not very familiar with these two Jeeps.
Now show me an M-38A1, CJ-5 and later spinoffs and I can handle it...
;)
I'd appreciate any help you can give.
Thanks and have a great day.
