While going to school in Prescott, AZ, about 10 years ago, I had thoughts of
finding a near mint Mustang or Hellcat at the graveyard and flying it out.
I checked, and the fact of the matter is, the only WWII aircraft there are
in the musuem section of the yard and are definately not for sale. They do
have quite a few 1950's vintage Navy planes, Neptunes, Traders, etc. They
even had some Albatrosses from the Coast Guard, but I was tolds that a
collector had the pink slip and they were awaiting transport. I think they
also had a Panther, which was an early jet. But what they have the most of
are are B-52's, DC-3's (AC-47's), KC-135's, A-7's and an assortment of
Helicopters, from the 50's to the 70's. Most of the warbirds that landed
there are now pots, pans and paperclips, what a sad testimonial to the
vehicles which saved the world.

Thanks,

Hi Guys,

I've been lurking for awhile and really enjoy this list! Hope it's OK for
a gal to drop in once-in-awhile...

The thread about sources for subs, etc., reminded me of a small cadre of
US Navy ships mothballed in Carquinez Straights near Vallejo, California.
When I was a kid I heard that John Wayne had bought and restored one and I
know the California Maritime Academy procured one of the ships as I
boarded her during restoration in 1971. Anyone know if these ships are
still there and available for purchase by private parties?

And speaking of "impossible dreams," how difficult is it to procure a WWII
relic from the aircraft graveyard in Arizona?
