[MV] Emergency Stopping

I have had one experience with emergency stopping of a M-3 Halftrack. Few
years ago, helped move two from storage to a display site in Birmingham,
Alabama. The owner told me that if I needed to stop quickly - "forget the
foot brake and grab the hand brake". As misfortune would have it,
approaching a traffic light (with green my way and at 15-20 mph) a couple of
local idiots stopped on the right, and I guess panicked or simply wanted to
test fate; however, they decided to "run" the red light, when half-track was
about 15 feet away. I remembered, and grabbed the hand brake, resulting in a
5 foot slide of a M-3, complete with rubber marks on road, and a miss
measured in fractions of an inch. I last saw Toyota speeding off into the
night. No blue paint on roller, so I guess I missed them. Owner said he
didn't think you could slide a half-track. No damage to vehicle or pride.
You CAN stop a M-3 with the hand brake within 10-15 feet at 15 MPH. I'm
sure glad too, because I would probably still be filling out forms for
running over a local with a tank. Tom Campbell 8-)
