[MV] Early MB cyl. head

Does anyone know when Willys started to cast "JEEP" into their MB cyl. heads?
I believe the slatgrill should not have a head with JEEP on it. I was given
the remains of, I believe, a pre-WWII Willy engine. The serial # is
unreadable, the front motor mount plate is not MB and it has a small dip stick
tube. But it does have a head with no JEEP markings on it.
