RE: [MV] Ford-Volvo engine

My mechanic advises me that the two engines that came with my GPW
included a Willys block that had a lot of problems, and a 60's? era
Ford-Volvo block--which is almost pristine--really good shape. The MB
block is not worth using in his evaluation, and is going ahead with the
Ford-Volvo block. Apparently they are very similar---although he has
noted the exhaust manifold won't bolt up correctly.

Can anyone tell me info about these engines? What about puting them in
a GPW? It appears to be a very solid engine and a considerably better
choice than the bad MB block--but I am also aware of the restoration and
value implications of this decision--but I can always get a different
engine later--after I have gotten some satisfaction from the project
5-10 years down the road.

Are there any surprises we are in for down the road?

Thanks in advance--Tim

I don't know if we are talking about the same engine. But I know that =
some has put Volvo B18 or B20 engines in Willys MB /Ford GPW. I have =
seen it myself. The Volvo engine is almost extremely reliably. It has =
been used in the volvo 140 series and amazon series cars, and also in =
the BV202 military vehicle (The one with 4 rubber belts), and I guess =
also in volvo military vehicles. It was fitted with one or two SU =
carburators, and even fuel injection. The convert I saw was made with a =
volvo gearbox (4 speed) and willys transfer (I think).=20
