Hi Corey, when you get the guts out of the cylinder, and the bore
cleaned up a bit, have a look at the bottom of the bore about 3/4" into
the cylinder - where the seal sits when it is at rest. The ususal
problem is that water / moisture has gathered here and pitted the floor
of the cylinder bore. If there is any substantial amount of pitting
just put the cylinder back on the shelf and buy a new one - it isn't
worth the hassle of working on if it doesn't clean up really easily.
Cast iron can be reamed or linished back to an acceptable surface, but
the cost and the work aren't worth it, plus if you take enough metal
out to get a really clean bore after deep pitting you are either out of
round or right on the limit for the seal capacity. A new m/c is the
equivalent of USD100 or so - less than a couple of taillight lenses on
the car you dont hit because you fitted it. For a few hundred dollars
your Dodge can have all new cylinders, lines, and hoses, this is one
area where even financially careful people like me dont mind spending
