Lee, =

$40 is quite reasonable to have all of the bearing and races pressed onto=

the pinion and the housing.

Regarding contact pattern. The most critical setting is pinion depth as
you have found, after that you just need to set the backlash on the ring
gear. I sounds to me like you may have had it set properly the first tim=
e.
The wiped pattern spot should be in the middle of the teeth both on the
drive and the coast side. Don't worry that not all of the tooth surface =
is
being wiped. What happens under load is that the parts deflect slightly
and that is when the other areas of the teeth make contact. You obviousl=
y
can't load the gearset just by turning it by hand. I'd either try to
reinstall the original shim or get another one of the same thickness that=

had the same good contact pattern.

Its really hard to determine what is a good contact pattern without
pictures. I encourage you to find a GM chassis manual that covers
differential gear setup. That's what I have used before. They have a
number of pictures of different incorrect gear contact patterns in the
manuals and recommendations as to what has to be done to correct it. Spe=
nd
some time on this because leaving a gearset incorrectly setup will at the=

least result in a gear wine, and at worse cause the gears to self destruc=
t.

I can relate to your comment "the result was not as I expected", the
geometry in a helical gear set is quite complex. That's why I recommend
using the GM Chassis manual as your guide. =

Good luck =
