[MV] Diesel vs gas vs gas vs gas

As I recall in WW2 there were 3 US/UK gasolines: 110 octane avgas, 85? octane
gas and 80? octane gasoline. I remember hearing a story about the allies
deciding to only have 2 types of gasoline so they went with avgas and the
higher octane regular gasoline. The story I heard was that after Normandy (when
the change was made) some of the British trucks could not stand the 'good' gas
and had serious engine problems.
Anyone remember this story?
