[MV] RE double-clutching

Double clutching is an art. All my MV's including that Piece Of S*&^ M151 (POS)
require double clutching (the 151 in 3rd anyways). The Chevy's and the CCKW's
are both different. You can double clutch a constant mesh tranny like the Clark
in a CCKW much easier than you can one in a WW2 Chevy or Dodge. Why? The Chevy
and Dodge tranny are sliding spur gear tranmissions. The idea in double
clutching is to match the speed of the gears to be engaged prior to engagement.
With a sliding gear tranny, you have gears with say 15 and 20 teeth that have
to mesh. In a constant mesh like the CCKW and all bigger WW2 truck tranny's,
you have about 5 or 6 little dog teeth that actually do the connection. If you
miss a little in a spur gear tranny, it will let you know it in no uncertain
terms GRRRRRR. In a CCKW, if you miss a little, you only have a few dog teeth
hitting each other, grr.

Another thing in double clutching is that you have to take a lot of things into
consideration; how cold is the engine, how much is the choke on, how cold is
the tranny, are you on a hill, do you have a load in the back, etc.

When you upshift, you pull the lever into neutral, let the clutch out with the
engine idling then quickly depress the clutch and slide it into the next higher
gear.

When downshifting, you pull the lever into neutral and let the clutch out then
accelerate the engine to match the speed of the lower gear then quickly depress
the clutch and slide it into the lower gear.

In an overdrive tranny like in a CCKW, it is interesting with 5th (OD). You
pull the lever into neutral then accelerate the engine (like you were down
shifting) then slip it into 5th.

Always remember: "Real Men Double-Clutch"

Steve

PS: My cars are now all automatics. After I twice tried to put my CCKW into 5th
Overdrive (it was already in 5th) which is where reverse is in the CCKW, I said
enough of shifting a car...
