[MV] Re: M38A1 battery drain problem

I found the same problem on a M37-B1 and suspect there are a lot
of MV's out there with this time bomb ticking. When I tested the
resistance of the open starter switch I read several hundred ohms
resistance. After I disassembled the starter switch I found a
piece of charred fish paper insulating the switch contact from
ground. I believe what happens is that heat builds up in the
switch when the engine is cranked for long periods of time. The
fish paper chars and the insulating properties are lost causing a
high resistance to ground. I didn't even need a meter to test for
it as I could see a little spark when I removed the battery
terminal. I did use an ohmmeter to back track it to the starter
switch though. To keep my battery connections clean I use the
aluminum anti-sieze compound on ALL the connections. Particularly
the grounds.
Good Luck,
Buzz
BTW I sell complete computer generated wiring diagrams for
MB/GPW, M37's, M38's
