Someone mentioned on this list a
while back that there were two speed selections for the transfer case and
that this was actually done in the tail housing of the 4 automatic trans.
I've looked at the automatic trans and that doesn't seem to be the case.

I'd be a bit concerned about the transfer case holding up to the the large
torque increase of the 454 especially if the driver was really into using
all of the available power of the 454. >>>>

The transfer case only functions are ...
1. To engage the front wheels when slippage on the rear wheels is
significant enough to warrant extra traction. This is done through a double
jaw-type clutch.
2. Operation of power take off assembly used for such equipment as winch,
dump body, hoist, and pumps on trucks with tank bodies. (This information is
from TM-9-8024, Operational and Organizational Maintenance: 2 1/2 Ton 6 X 6
Cargo Trucks M135 and M211, 3 October 1955, Page 384, Section XVIII:
Transfer and Controls, Paragraph 206: Description and Data.)

The transmission has a two speed reduction unit located in rear of
transmission and is of planetary-type, incorporating a cone-type clutch
applied by a piston to hold internal gear when unit is in LOW RANGE or
reduction. A multiple disk-type clutch, also applied by a piston, is used
for placing the reduction unit in HIGH RANGE or direct drive. (information
is from TM-9-8024, Operational and Organizational Maintenance: 2 1/2 Ton 6 X
6 Cargo Trucks M135 and M211, 3 October 1955, Page 337, Section XVII:
Transmission and Controls, Paragraph 193: Description and Data, Under A:
Description, Number 5)

I have personally rebuilt my reduction unit that's in the transmission on
the truck and I have 2 complete transmissions(one whole and ready to go, and
one still in parts) These concepts are hard to understand from just reading
the descriptions out of the manuals. However, it all becomes apparent once
you have seen the parts themselves. I am willing to scan the pages of the
manuals to all that are interested.

Thanks for your time.
