Hi List,

Some very sound advice from Mark but a word of warning should any of you
bring radio fitted vehicles to the UK for perhaps D-Day 1999.

The possession of a transmitting device is illegal, but largely ignored,
the use will gain attention of the Govt regulating body who are now taking
an interest in these things.

Radio use is controlled by an agency of the Dept of Trade and Industry
(DTI) called the Radiocommunications Agency (RA) and the field officers of
the Radio Investigation Service (RIS). The commercial bands here are very
small and heavily crowded, the amateur allocations are jealously guarded
and encroachment into either will attract immediate attention.

For commercial use the radio has to be a UK type approved device to a
severe specification, there are no "hobby" allocations except the Amateur
Service and CB which is entirely different from the US standard in mode and
frequency, the importation/possession of non-approved CB's is specifically
illegal.

The law allows the RIS to search and seize without a warrant and includes
the offending radio power supply - battery-dynamo/alternator-engine ie.,
the vehicle. . . . . . . . . .

Although the RIS are thin on the ground there is a steady insertion of
remote, programmable monitors being installed on hill-top sites being
accessed via a dial-up phone line.

Be a bit discreet if over here and apply some common sense is the best
advice.
