The question about using the std 302 GMC (mil version) in the M211/135 instead
of swapping it with something else came up.

The problem is the tranny (automatic) as is well evidenced by this notes file.
The problem with just changing the tranny is as follows:

The most logical conversion would be to use a CCKW Clark 5 speed OD tranny and
bell housing. Jack Tomlin did this with his DUKW (put a mil 302 into it).
Apparently GMC did a 'you bastard' with the motor casting. The 302/auto combo
has the starter mounted lower on the bellhousing than the 270/Clark (CCKW)
combo. If you put the CCKW bellhousing onto the 302, you cannot mount the
starter, it hits the 'you bastard' piece of useless casting added to the
side of the 302 block. You can sit there with a grinder and grind away at this
rectangular boss and fit the starter. It will take you a while though. I serves
no function an is not on any other engine.

In addition, you will still need the clutch pedal and hydraulic/mechanical
linkage ets.

The mil 302 is somewhat different than the civy 302. The mil one has a funny
Holley? carburator. The front pulley, and water pump are differant. In
addition, the front end of the block casting is different than the civy one as
far a accessories mounting is concerned. The mil 302 is rated at 145 hp and the
civy one is rated at 160 hp.
