I would use a little three-terminal voltage regulator such as the 7806
installed in the power line to the fuel gauge circuit, hooked up like this...

| 7806 |
| |
12v from --------- 6v out - pin 3
battery >------ | | |-------> to fuel gauge/sender
pin 1 | circuit
V
pin 2 and/or mounting tab
to ground

I'm sure this would work great and cost only a couple bucks. The 7806
regulator is a common electronic part available from many suppliers - Radio
Shack doesn't stock them in their stores anymore but they can easily get them
for you. Ask for their number RSU-11392008 price $1.49.
