Quote: "A metal rim was inserted before bolting together to protect the tube
from being
pinched."

The metal rim is called a "runflat" and is designed to stop the type from
coming off the rim should a puncture occur in action - When you fit a tyre
using combat rims and run-flats, the tyre wall rim is pinched and held
between the runflat and the edge of the combat rim (ie... |O|________|O|
...... where the "O" represents the tyre wall, the elongated "U" is the
runflat, and the outer " I " the edge of the combat split-rim, the tube when
inflated then rests around the runflat...... and if like me you have tyres
which have been on the rims for many years, the run-flats make it real hard
to remove the tyre even after all the bolts are removed.... I had to burn
two tyres off !!!

Admittedly most Jeep owners I know use a rubber flap in the place of the
runflat to keep the tubes from making contact with the rims, either when the
rims are being bolted together, but also to stop them welding to the rims
after age.

I did not replace the two runflats I removed since they make life really
hard, and unless you're going to be using the vehicle for some heavy
off-roading, arent really worth the effort.
