A friend of mine kindly offered to send me a sector shaft repair kit for my
'51 M38's steering gear - but there's a possible hitch: it appears to be
intended use on MB/GPWs.
He feels they used the exact same unit, and in the TM photos the two steering
gear assemblies look the same, but a local MVer advised that the M38 and
MB/GPW steering gear units are not the same.
This particular local opinion, while prolific, has rarely been correct,
however. <grin>
As the therapists say, I'm conflicted. Before he goes to the expense and
trouble of sending me the MB/GPW kit, and before I go to the trouble of
pulling the steering out of the M38, I thought I might seek the advice of the
Mil-Veh experts. Are they the same, or enough alike to use the same sector
shaft, bushings, etc.? Thanks!
