Although you are right, it was widely available, I believe that it was
found to be linked to cancer. When I was about 16 I used to rebuild
chainsaws at a hardware store and we used to use Carbon Tet to clean
engines. It was a wonderful solvent for cleaning engines. Sort of like
super lacquer thinner. The stuff was pulled from the store shelves one d=
ay
and that was that. That was about 1974. I don't know exactly how bad it=

truly was, but I haven't seen it since then. I hope it wasn't really ba=
d
stuff since I used to immerse both arms into a big vat of the stuff sever=
al
times per day to wash off engine parts. Nothing has fallen off yet. =
