[MV] Generator Output

With the engine running on my WC shouldn't I get a reading from my generator
with my multi-meter when I hook it up ground to ground and field to positive
and/or Ammeter?
I get no reading with any combination... nothing at the voltage reg/ this is
the 12 Volt positive ground system..type vrh-4104a-1 regulator.
