Hi,

If you can turn the starter motor _shaft_, not the gear, or just rotate the
engine slightly in the running direction by inching round using a lever in
the ring gear or a spanner on the crankshaft pulley nut it should pop back
when it disengages.

The effect of the engine starting and trying to grossly overspeed the starter
is the method that runs the gear back down the bendix spiral spline.
Typically the starter cranks the motor at just 80 RPM whereas the engine
running at idle will be what, 500 - 800 RPM perhaps.

If it was working OK before and no great force was used when it was run into
engagement it should be OK now.
