I got 2 spare transfer cases with my truck. I am planning on replacing
the bearings and seals on one and throwing it in there. I started to
take one of them apart and just got distraced.. Got most of the way
though. As far as I know to get it apart you're gonna need either a real
strong arm or an impact wrench. Why you ask? For the nuts that hold the
companion flange in place. There is a cotter pin in the way that you
have to remove then the nut should come right off (but it never does) so
since the whole shaft is gonna want to turn when you go to turn that nut
the best way to get it is an impact wrench.. When I did mine I didn't
have one so I stuck a big screwdriver through one of the bolt holes for
the driveshaft and through one of the holes in the transfercase although
I don't recommend this method. Let me know how your rebuild goes as I am
planning on doing mine soon too.
