List,
My M-715 is struck in 4wd. Part of the problem is that the shifter mounting
bracket isn't very secured. The reason it's not secure is because I've got a
TH400 and a small block and the bracket is supposed to mount to the
transmission. My questions are:

1. What are the steps for 4wd engagement and disengagement. From my
understanding you lock the hubs (assuming you have locking hubs), pull the
right most level towards the rear of the truck while in neutral. I get a
little fuzzy on the disengaging. I know you have to drive in reverse, but
how far? Do you have to shift into neutral after driving in reverse?
2. Has anyone on this list replaced the transmission with a different
transmission? How did you mount the 4wd shifter bracket?
3. Why do these trucks have 7 leafs in the leaf springs? Does removing some
of the leafs help it ride smoother?

What happened was I had my transfer case rebuilt and the mechanic noted that
the 4wd shifter wasn't mounted. So I asked him if he could just secure it
too the floor board. Well....that didn't work very good. I was able to put
it in 4wd no problem, but when it came time to take it out....no dice. I had
to drive home at 20mph, luckily home was just around the corner.
