Personally I have great luck with cheaper civilian equivalent or aftermarket
parts with my daily driver M-37 and then I have enough money left to drive the
darn wheels off of the thing, while keeping it mostly original. The original
parts are more for vehicles which could pass inspections which my old
motorpool workhorse could never come close to surviving. As the original
parts become more and more expensive, most of us will be forced financially to
go the repro route. I have had good success with cleaning, patching, and
multifiltering myself, and in MV magazine (the best!) I see lots of other
alternatives, including OEM or NOS. Mike
