<< Offut(sp?) >> Offutt AFB is the former home of the Strategic Air Command
and is the present home of the United States Strategic Command. During WWII it
was known as Offutt Field and the Martin Bomber plant was located on this site
as well. The Martin Bomber plant began the war making B-26 Marauders but later
switched to production of the B-29 SuperFortress. Several B-29s including The
Enola Gay and Bock's Car were manufactured there. Offutt Field was named for
Lt. Jarvis Offutt, the first american airman to be killed in action in WWI. It
is my recollection that he was from the Omaha, Bellevue area but I am not sure
anymore.
