Many of the ground troops in Normandy refered to the US 9th Tactical Airforce
as the "American Luftwaffe." It is an often overlooked historical fact that
the highest ranking american officer to be killed in action was a friendly
fire casualty. Lt Gen Leslie McNair, CG of the US Army Ground Forces was
killed by American bombs near St. Lo. All of this is said as a matter of
historical interest and is not intended to disparage the heroic service of
American airmen in WWII or any other war. Accidents happen and thats the way
it is, they knocked off a hell of a lot more Nazis than they did Allies.
