How about an auxillary power unit like this:

In 1955 the military was working on a program to improve aircraft arresting
gear. To simulate a jet (F-84) they loaded up a CCKW 353 to 9 tons and
strapped 10 JATO rockets to the thing. On it's forth and final run
(windshield down?) it reached a blistering 105mph!!! and with the
arresting gear, it stopped in a distance of 600 feet. Must have been a
heck of a ride. Is this still the standing land-speed-record for a 2.5
ton?

I have done some engine swaps to military vehicles including 460 Ford to
M37 and 392 Chrysler Hemi to 41 Dodge WC12. They are pretty easy as far as
engine swaps go. Plenty of room under the hood and divorced transfer cases
make the job easier. You can really improve the performance of the stock
vehicle and bring up the top speed. And as for originality, it's yours, do
what you want with it. I'd like to build a supercharged BB Chevy/CCKW
complete with a chopped closed cab. Ah, I can hear the purists sceaming
now...
