Hi List:

I live in Bogota, Colombia (south america) and I'm looking to buy an MB or
GPW. The problem is that in Colombia MB or GPW's are almost no existent
except for those that were given by the US ARMY to our country's army after
WWII.

Recently a found a '42 MB that has survived but not with out paying its toll
when proudly repaired by local mechanics. The major "changes" are:

Windshield frame is still original but the windows can not be lifted (they
are welded to the frame)
Somebody decided that a tailgate was needed so now it sports a fancy "Jeep"
one.
Original seat frames are lost
Gas is now filled from the exterior using a resemblance of a CJ model.
With exception of the speedometer all other gauges are not original
Emergency brake is missing
All electrical parts are non original and its now 12V
With exception of the hood and grill all other exterior pieces have been
tampered with.
Braking system is now that of a CJ-5

On the other hand the MB appears to be mechanically sound and still have the
original engine with no "willys" castings; also transmissions and gear box
are also in good shape.

HERE is were I need your help. I have 2 choices:

-I'll be visiting the US en late September so I could by one there that even
if is not restored at least has been kept in its original condition. Prices
are between $2500 to $3500 depending on its shape. Figure out another $1.000
in crating and shipping expenses plus another $1.500 in import duties. This
means that I'll end up paying between $5K to $6K for the imported jeep.

-On the other hand I can buy the Colombian MB for something around $3500 and
spend an extra $?????? in restoring it.

What would you do???

Your advice is welcomed.

Mauricio
