The decon sprayers are pretty much just like fire extinguishers
except that they spray a chemical compound designed to remove or
neutralize chemical or biological contamination. I do not know what
the older ones used, but the current ones spray a compound called DS2.
DS2 is very nasty stuff that is not much safer to exposed personnel
than the agents it is supposed to neutralize. The current sprayers
use a nitrogen cylinder much like a CO2 cylinder to pressurize them.

On an interesting note, DS2 will remove any paint except CARC. I
asked the instructor at NBC school what was used before CARC was used,
and he said that DS2 has been around much longer than CARC and the
Army just figured that if you had to decon you were just going to
have to drive around without paint for awhile. He said he once saw a
M-151 sprayed with DS2 instead of the training mix and all the paint
was stripped in 20 minutes!
