I would contact the museum of Army transport in Beverley,Yorkshire for a
definitive answer.

However, that bastion of academic wisdom the Oxford Compendium which just
happens to be on CD now gives us:

lorry n. Brit. (pl. -ies)
1a large strong motor vehicle for transporting goods etc.
2a long flat low wagon.
3a truck used on railways and tramways.

Etymology 19th c.: orig. uncert.

Hope this helps,
My new e mail is NIGELHAY@tanksrus.freeserve.co.uk
