The first echelon of maintenance is the operator level stuff. At the
company level in WWII, there was what my friend called a "transportation
section" composed of a corporal and two PFC's. These handled the three
jeeps assigned to the company. I don't think they carried more than the
tool kits assigned to the vehicle. Now, the guy I talked to the other week
was in the Battalion Motor Section of a Field Artillery Battalion. His
shop was composed of a set of tool chests which were periodically loaded
and unloaded from the CCKW he used for that purpose. He said he had a dump
truck usually assigned for this.
