I am pleased to announce:
It is off ! The damage is not severe (to me or the vehicle)
After using combinations of all the ideas suggested, it finally let loose with
a mighty thump and, I swear, a sigh. It was relieved too, I guess.
I immediately went to bed and slept the sleep of the MV blessed.
