Lucky you, see what you missed? We've been having fun for a long time
before you came along.

ran rough and made lots (and LOTS and LOTS) of rich fuely smoke.

Probably bad gas in the tank. A lot of engines will run like they're
"stiff" after long storage, they loosen up after they run awhile, my
deuce is a good example. Tune up, clean plugs, clean the carb, and
see what that does.

I ran it for less that five minutes and put the choke and throttle
back in afet it seemed like it would stay running.

That's right. Chokes can be funny, different on different engines,
takes some "feel". Sometimes pull it all the way out before cranking,
sometimes after you start cranking, some only need half choke, then
back in. Mine needs to be pumped, then choked after cranking has
started, otherwise its a long process.

Oh, don't expect the choke to keep the engine at a high idle for long,
it'll flood the engine eventually. Instead pull the throttle out a
little, but don't rev it over 1000 or 1200 rpm's, it doesn't help
anyting.

I'll bet that if you let that jeep run for 30 minutes it'll clear up,
but I'd check it over first. Don't forget to change the oil.

(no experience with a choke or throttle) The smoke did not seem do go
away, but the car has not been run in a couple years and perhaps that
will go away after a good long drive?

the clutch the other pedals move, kind of like on an old shower when
you turn the hot water and the pipes move around behind the wall and
you can see the cold water handle move. Is this normal in these old
Jeeps or has something serious come loose?

Lube!

Undetermined, ......as yet!
