Sounds horribly familiar! In our case (Buick/Rover V8) we eventually
decided that one or more exhaust valves were 'sticky' and failing to
close on time - hence the banging down the exhaust pipe, loss of power
but startability. This was put down to long term storage (ie greater than
6 weeks) with unleaded petrol in the tank.

We went through the whole list of 'the usual suspects', and eventually
cured the problem which has not recurred since. We took the truck on a
long drive (circa 150 miles) and showed it no mercy. I guess the hard
work finally shook/blew the gunk free, but we'll never know for sure.
