First time I drove my '44 MB jeep to work through the Greenwich, Conn. tolls on I-95
(1973), the tolltaker told me civilians weren't allowed to drive military vehicles still
with military markings. She wouldn't raise the gate, but called a state trooper. He told
me the same thing. I "promised" him I'd paint out the markings as soon as I got home from
work. I tried to explain that it was properly registered, etc. to no avail.
For the next two years, until I left that job, I wore my old field jacket and used the
far right lane of the toll booths which was used for oversize loads and convoys and had no
gate. Got waved through every time - they thought it was a military vehicle! (And, no, I
didn't paint over the markings.)
