[MV] M35 Transfer case sprag clutch

Hi Guys -

Need help understanding the operation of the sprag clutch in each gear.
Our '67 Kaiser-Jeep cargo truck does not have the airshift upgrade. I
notice that the low/reverse shift rod comes out the back of the shift tower,
and is hooked via collapsible linkage to the transfer case. In 1st gear or
reverse gear, the front output shaft freewheels in one direction, but locks
up the other way. The direction of freewheel/lockup remains the same in
either gear. Shifting into 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or 5th (OD) brings the rod forward,
and the output shaft freewheels in _both_ directions.

1. Is this normal operation?
2. Is front wheel drive locked out in the upper gear ranges? (If you're
moving, you obviously don't need it??)
3. Since sprag lockup remains the same in both low and reverse, there's
no front wheel drive in reverse, either?
4. In effect, the front axle is only driven in 1st gear (hi or low range)?

'Preciate any light you can shed on this. Thanks.
