[MV] Winch cable

I need to buy a replacement winch cable for my M51 which has a 10 ton
winch on the front.

The manual says it uses 200 ft of 5/8 inch cable. That must be good for
35K lbs at least. I don't know how I could generate a 35K lb pull so
I'm considering using 1/2" cable which is good for about a 27K lb
Breaking strength.

My question is should I go the few extra bucks and get galvanized cable
or not? What does the military use and how do they maintain it?

If I buy plain steel cable I have to believe it is going to get very
dirty, accumulate moisture and rust. But galvanized cable is almost
twice the price of ungalvanized cable.

Any tips on cable maintenance? I suppose I could hook a piece of canvas
around the winch drum when I wasn't using the winch to try and keep the
water off of it.
