Re: [MV] MB rear axles

I meet a fellow at the Big Bear MV swap in Califorina a few years ago
that had locking hubs on the rear wheels of his GPW. The reason that he
did it was so that he could tow it with less wear and tear on the drive
line. He was a machinist so he did the work himself but it is quite
involved because the axels are hardened. In order to weld the front axle
stubs to the cut off rears the axels first have to be annealed to make
them workable. Them special fixtures were made to allow for proper
alignment during welding and finally heat treating to harden the axle.
He said he has had no problem with the axles, but he only drives the
jeep around swap meets and in parades.
