Thought the list might like to know
about an interesting article I read
yesterday. The Utility Environment
Report dated March 12 carried a
story about a new test vehicle that
Lockheed Martin and the Army are
testing. It's a 5-ton truck powered
by a hybrid diesel-electric
propulsion system. The diesel
engine powers an electric generator
which powers electric drive motors
on each wheel. Regenerative braking
is provided, the diesel operates at
a constant speed, and fuel
consumption is said to 25-50% less
than a conventional truck. The
truck can also provide 100kw of
auxiliary power for other off-truck
uses. The most interesting feature
is that the truck can supposedly run
totally off of battery power for
short periods in a "stealth" mode.
No comment on what all of those
batteries do to the load capacity of
the truck. Sorry, no pictures
provided, and likely not coming to a
unit near you in the near future!
