Concerned listers and vehicle importers to the US,

I was recently visiting one of my sites of interest and I came across a
request for comment regarding the importation of implements of war from none
other than the (B)ATF. If someone else has already reported this, please
forgive my waste of bandwidth.

They are requesting comment only on certain topics regarding the "Records of
Acquisition and Disposition--Registered Importers of Arms, Ammunition, and
Implements of War on the U.S. Munitions Imports List":

(a) Whether the collection of information is necessary for the proper
performance of the functions of the agency, including whether the information
shall have practical utility;
(b) the accuracy of the agency's estimate of the burden of the collection of
information;
(c) ways to enhance the quality, utility, and clarity of the information to
be collected;
(d) ways to minimize the burden of the collection of information on
respondents, including through the use of automated collection techniques or
other forms of information technology; and
(e) estimates of capital or start-up costs and costs of operation,
maintenance, and purchase of services to provide information.

I've only filled out 4 ATF Form 6 but they seem straightforward and take no
more than a few minutes to prepare. With the exception of the current hold,
I found that they returned my request in a timely fashion and I have no real
gripes with their old policies. I'm not a licensed importer as I only import
for my own use so I could be mistaken on the time and inconvenience for a
licensed importer.

I think that they (ATF) have been doing a pretty good job so far and didn't
make my life difficult importing either my Stalwart or Ferret. The current
hold is a sore subject though . . .

The IMPORTANT thing to remember IF you choose to respond to this request for
comment, is to be above all be POLITE and give CONSTRUCTIVE comment. I
further suggest that if you have not yet imported a vehicle into the US, you
might refrain from responding because you may not know how really easy it is
(was) before the hold.

Use the following link or url to find the information request. There is a
deadline of April 13, 1999, so time to respond draws short.
