Hi Mark,
Having changed more pinion seals(the seal where the driveshaft goes into the
differential) than I care to remember(at the tender age of 38), I can give a
blow-by- blow description of how to do it:
First, remove the driveshaft from the differential yoke & move it out of the
way. Take a center punch & mark the yoke, nut & pinion shaft. placing the
marks in a straight line. Next remove the nut & yoke(a hammer usually is
needed to remove the yoke once the nut is removed). replace the seal. check
the yoke surface where the seal rides, If it's got a groove worn in it,
you'll need a repair sleeve to put on it(available from Chicago Rawhide (CR)
& other seal makers). Put some non- hardening sealer(Permatex #2 works well)
on the yoke splines & reinstall, lining up your punch marks. Reinstall the
nut & tighten until the punch marks all line up & the nut is tight(you'll
feel the nut tighten against the yoke first, then line up the marks). refill
the differential & viola! With an impact gun & some practice the whole job
can be done in about 45 minutes. By following the above procedure, you
maintain the preload on the pinion brgs. If you have any questions, e.mail me
off list.
Hope this helps,
