Huh?
Re 1st post:
It is not unusual for van trucks to be surplused w/o bodies. DRMO currently
has listed M109 shop van trucks w/o van body. Your van body could have been
transfered to a M44 chassis as the GMCs were phased out, or more likely,
removed to use as a storage shed, either by the military or subsequent owner.
Replacements are available from Memphis Equipment Co.(901-774-0600 # for
Memphis Branch, also with office in Chambersburg, PA) and Richard Greene
Equipment (I don't have number in front of me, but can find if you need it).
Regarding use of equipment, we may be able to help more if we have a little
more info. Where did you get the trucks? Not specifically, but in general
ie: Farmers yard, GSA auction, Memphis Equipment, County Highway Dept., etc.
The markings on the front and rear bumpers will tell us where the vehicles
were stationed. If they have been painted over, try lightly sanding them,
then post what you find. This takes time, so be patient.
Also, look at every scrap of paper in the glove box. I once found the trip
ticket from the base to the DRMO to turn in a truck to sell, other times I
have found an equipment inspection report. As the GMCs have been out of US
service for some time, it may be VERY difficult to track anything down.
Finally, if you go to the Olive-drab site, there is a link to the US National
Archives that you could try, or you can go to a site called Green Six and
look for vehicles in the same model and hood number range.
Good luck!
David
