To my knowledge the war-time Gas can spouts were made of flexible steel with a
screw-on conical brass strainer at the tip. they had no thread to screw on to
the can itself, but rather an expanding rubber ring with a lever to create a
fast leak-free (ahem!) connection.
This is my 2 cents...Is there a specialist in the list who knows more?
