Hi! I am refering to MCO P4750.3 dated 6 Dec, 1963. "Registration numbers
applied to equipment shall consist of the letters 'USMC' and a series of
numbers for identification. Markings shall be applied, using capital letters
as shown in appendix B."
(This appendix has drawings very similar to the Army marking manual of the
same period, BUT there is no national insignia (star), and no unit markings
on front or rear bumpers, but with the registration numbers on the rear
bumper or bumperettes instead.)
To paraphrase a lot of text, these registration numbers are assigned
permanently, and are normally applied by the manufacturer, and cannot be
changed. The letters and numbers should be in one line if possible.
"Registration markings shall be uniformly applied, using letters and numerals
2, 3, 4, or 5 inches in height. The use of the largest size practicable in
the available space will be the determining factor in choosing letter and
numeral dimensions.
Letters and numerals will be close-spaced, but groups of letters will be
seperated from groups of numerals; e. g., USMC 000000."
"Equipment painted with Marine Corps green enamels shall be marked with
yellow semigloss enamal or lusterless yellow enamal, as appropriate."
"The use of locally procured self-adhering letters and numerals (decals) is
authorized, provided that the requirements as to size, spacing, and color, as
set forth herein, are met."
Good Luck,
David
