Hydrometer... good idea - shall give it a go at the weekend... not something
i'd ever considered for the toolkit.

The only certain method for determining battery condition is to test the
acidity of its cells. Beg, borrow or visit Halfords for a hydrometer.
Each cell of a fully charged battery should give a specific gravity
(relative density?) reading of between 1.280-1.300 (32-34 deg Baume), and
1.150 (19 deg Baume) if fully discharged, at 60 deg F ambient.

It may be that one or more cells will give a reading at variance with the
others, which would indicate terminal illness.

Another possibility is that the voltage sense wire in the charging
circuit (if you have such a wire) has been rendered high resistance by
the fire. This would have the effect of holding the level of charge low.
