I do not think anyone has ever been able to give any details of the
operation at the Allison Steele Manufacturing Company in Phoenix Arizona.
My slat grill jeep (20-1-42) has a steel tag on the dash saying "this
vehicle was refurbished by the Allison Steel Manufacturing Company in
1944". Did they do full rebuilds, touch ups and were some vehicle brought
back to the states to be tarted up before going to the allie forces such as
Australia? Would there be any archive records about this company and how
many & which vehciles and range of vehicles did they refurbish. It is an
interesting hole in the history of this jeep.
Two of the copper data plates have what look like shrapnel holes, so I have
always guessed that maybe this jeep had been shot up at some time prior to
1944, who knows? I have been told that similiar type operations occured in
New York and LA. I have never seen another jeep in Australia with these
refurbish plates.

On a different note my jeep along with 20 or so others were involved in
carrying the old diggers around on ANZAC Day here in Brisbane. I did four
trips along the march route carrying nurses, sailors and pilots, all of
whom greatly appreciated the ride. Knees and hips are getting a bit worn
out theses days. I have done this for the last four years and this march
had the biggest turnout I have seen.

Any info on the tag greatly appreciated.
