Richard Notton <Richard@fv623.demon.co.uk> is right about US
cards not working in French ATM machines.
However I must say that I NEVER had any of my american
bank-issued Credit cards (VISA, MC) refused in France ANYWHERE.
Sometimes you have to explain that it is indeed a CREDIT card,
not a DEBIT card (ATM & Carte Bleue: these do have a chip) and
you also have to tell them (in the most remote areas) that no,
you don't have to key in a password on their little pads...
Speaking French of course does help a bit.
For the travelers to Normandy, be advised that some of the
smaller places and very small restaurants will not take ANY
credit card, but your Hotel will. The French are not used to
plastic transactions for amounts less than, say, a couple of 100
francs...
So, heed Richard's advice, bring cash, and change to FF at the
airport, there are a lot more fun things to do in Bayeux than
wait in line at the Bank.
