[MV] M38A1 Frame Colors

Hi All,

I have a couple of questions:

1) What was the original frame(and all running gear) color. I suspect it
was OD, but the first coat on my frame is black! By running gear I mean
steering components, springs, drive shaft, axles, transmission, transfer
case, etc. The next step in my rebuild is the frame and running gear.

2) Was the M38A1 ever undercoated? Mine has been painted OD over the
undercoating, but I have not scraped down to the metal to check how many
coats(if any ) are under the undercoating. My Jeep is a 1954 model, but has
a few rebuild tags (on transmission, transfer, steering gear) that say
"OVERHAULED AT FB, GA, ORD 1 DATE 11-19-62". I know it means Fort
Benning, GA, but what is an ORD 1 rebuild? Could this have been a complete
rebuild and update including undercoating, or did the military do
undercoating in 1962? I forgot to mention that on the bottom left of the
plate there is a 14 stamped under the FB, GA - Does this mean anything?

Thanks - Matt

1954 M38A1 - South Carolina
