[MV] T214 Motor in WC54

WC 54 motor last ran last summer. Had all new plug wiring, coil, etc., but
still wouldn't hit. Set distributor as per manual with timing mark on top
dead center etc. but still wouldn't hit. Backfired and spit a lot, but
wouldn't run. (running with a Chevy Carter 1 bbl carburetor) Finally, in
desperation, I started twisting the distributor around the arc it was
supposed to be in. Got better as I twisted counterclockwise but ran out of
adjusting room with the lock down plate under the distributor. Took bolt out
and twisted some more ccw, smoothed out and purred like a kitten - really
loud kitten as no exhaust system (yet). I just assumed it "jumped time" and
made a homemade plate that would allow more ccw adjustment. Runs fine, but
wrong carburetor and air cleaner. Planning on starting work again soon on
WC54 and was thinking ahead (and out loud) about best way to approach
problem. May just take carburetor and air cleaner off of junker and go with
motor that's in ambulance. Ambulance only shows 13,000 miles - but I don't
know if it works or not.

I envisioned the timing gear being worn out and chain had jumped a tooth
ahead, but you guys tell me it doesn't work that way. I may be causing
myself more work to change the motors when I don't need to. The original ran
fine, with no smoke. Only ran it for brief periods - noise and neighbors. I
was born lazy and had an early relapse - changing two motors sounds like more
work than one carburetor - humm (mental gears turning).

Thanks for the information. Tom Campbell - Birmingham, Alabama USA
